4K imaging on a stereo zoom microscope

A microscope camera turns an inspection station into something you can document. Instead of describing a defect, you capture it. Instead of two people crowding the eyepieces, the image goes on a monitor. The 8MPB does that at full 4K resolution, fast enough that the live picture stays fluid while you move a part around under the objective.

At its centre is a Sony IMX585 back-illuminated CMOS sensor — 1/1.2″ with relatively large 2.9 µm pixels. Bigger pixels gather more light, which under a microscope means a brighter, cleaner image with less noise. Illumination is usually the limiting factor in stereo zoom work, so sensor sensitivity does real work here.

No computer required

The HDMI 2.0 output is the feature most people end up valuing most. Connect the camera straight to a 4K monitor, plug in the supplied USB mouse, and the camera’s built-in XCamView software handles viewing, capture, recording, image adjustment and measurement on its own. A bench that has no room for a PC still gets a full inspection station.

If you would rather work on a computer, USB 3.0 connects to Windows, macOS or Linux, with ToupView and ToupLite supplied by the manufacturer. Network output is there for sending the image elsewhere on site.

What you need to fit it

The camera needs a vertical port to look through, which means a trinocular pod (91-001-TR), plus a C-mount video coupler (96-001) to adapt that port to the camera thread. A binocular pod has no camera port at all.

For stereo zoom work we recommend a 0.5X coupler. The IMX585 sensor is physically large, and a 1X coupler crops into the middle of the image — you lose much of the field of view you can see through the eyepieces. At 0.5X the image fills the sensor and what is on screen resembles what you actually see.

Measurement and capture

Beyond stills and video, the software measures: point-to-point distance, horizontal and vertical, angles, circles, rectangles, arcs, polygons and area. Measurements calibrate against a known reference such as a stage micrometer, and on a continuous-zoom microscope you calibrate at each magnification you plan to use. Results overlay the live image and export as CSV.

Images save as JPEG, TIFF, PNG or RAW, to a computer or straight to an SD card or USB stick when the camera is running standalone.

Why is a 0.5X coupler recommended for stereo zoom work?

The IMX585 has a large 1/1.2" sensor. A 1X coupler would crop into the centre of the image and throw away much of the field of view you can see through the eyepieces. A 0.5X coupler spreads the image across the whole sensor, so what appears on screen is closer to what you see down the tubes.
